Southern Africa Travel Guide

Garden Route

Country: South Africa
Region: Garden Route
The Garden Route is home to some of the best beaches in the world. There is too many to mention from surfers paradise Plettenberg Bay to the tranquil De Hoop Nature Reserve. In between you will find excellent stops like Knysna, Wilderness and Mossel Bay, the sunniest town in South Africa with 320 days of sunshine a year. The garden route is also a paradise for bird watchers. It is home of the green Knysna Turaco (or “Lourie” as they call it here)… and about 500 other recorded bird species. The area offers many interesting opportunities for short and longer hikes ideal for birders. You can expect frequent sightings of robins, cuckoos, sunbirds, Cape sugarbird, herons, crowned eagle, falcons and other predators.
