Southern Africa Travel Guide

Cape Malay food

The arrival of Malay slaves in South Africa also brought a cultural change in the kitchen. Now dishes like sosatie, biryani and bobotie are considered truly South African. Favourite snacks include samoosas, dhaltjies (chilli bites) and koesisters. Afrikaners call the latter koeksisters, a curled and much oilier variety that drips of syrup.
