Camel Thorn (kameeldoring) |
This Acacia tree is native to and common in arid parts of southern Africa. It was originally known as "Acacia giraffae" and the Afrikaans talking people called it Kameeldoring, after the Afrikaans word for giraffe "kameelperd". Only these tall mammals can reach the succulent leaves at the top. Most others will be scared off by its impressive thorns. The seeds of the camel thorn can be used as an alternative to coffee beans. The tree is also known by its Tswana name Mokala.
