Southern Africa Travel Guide

Southern Right Whale

Owes its name to the fact that whalers thought the eubalaena australis were the "right" whales to hunt. After being killed, they floated to the surface making them easy targets. Southern Rights can be identified by its callosities. The light colour of these roughened patches of skin is cased by the whale lice that live on them. Furthermore Southern Rights have two blowholes, causing their spray to be V-shaped.
