Southern Africa Travel Guide

Halfmensboom

Country: South Africa
Region: Richtersveld
The "Halfmensboom" (Semi-Human Tree") is in fact a succulent plant that can only be found in the arid Richtersveld area at the border between South Africa's Northern Cape and Namibia. It blooms in the African spring (August to October) with tubular velvet-textured flowers. If you ever get lost here, the semi-human tree is a good emergency compass as the top usually points north.
