Southern Africa Travel Guide

Mopane Tree

This tree mostly growns in in the northern part of the region. In South Africa you are mostly likely to see it in the shape of a desk or other furniture as its wood is extremely solid and durable. However most people in southern Africa know the tree, mostly because of its favourite resident: the mopane worm. This "worm" (in fact a moth caterpillar) is an important source of protein to many. It is also offered as an exotic snack to curious diners at some African restaurants.
