Southern Africa Travel Guide

Vredefort Dome

Country: South Africa
Some 2 billion years ago a giant asteroid, about 10 km in diameter, hit planet earth in the heart of present-day South Africa. Between the Free State and the north West Province you can still see the result of the biggest verified asteroid impact in the world. The multi-ringed Vredefort crater has a diameter of 250-300 kilometers and the conservancy is a World Heritage site.

TESTIMONIAL

Many thanks, trip was great! Saw the big five in the Kruger and swam with whale-sharks. Lots of long days driving but that's the nature of these trips if you want to see loads.
