Southern Africa Travel Guide
iSimangaliso Wetland Park (Greater St Lucia) |
Country: South Africa
iSimangaliso is the Zulu word for “marvel”, a fitting description of this pristine estuary formerly known as the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park. It is home to more species than Kruger National Park. A boat trip takes you close (yet safely) into the habitat of the hippo and crocodiles that inhabit the estuary. This World Heritage site is literally a “marvel” for bird watchers. There are more than 530 recorded species found here. These include fish eagle, pelican and flamingos. As this tidal estuary consists of no less than five eco-systems, there is an enormous avian diversity.
