Southern Africa Travel Guide

South African Rand

The Rand is the South African currency since 1961 when it replaced the pound. It’s named after the Witwatersrand area near Johannesburg where most of the country’s gold deposits were found. It is also a valid currency in Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia. The new bank notes depict the Big Five: the rhino on ten rand, the elephant on 20, the lion on 50, the buffalo on 100 and the leopard on 200. The one rand coin is adorned by a picture of the springbok, South Africa’s national symbol. Exhange rate (January 2009): 1GBP=14.6 ZAR; 1 EUR=13.3 ZAR; 1USD=10.0 ZAR;
