Southern Africa Travel Guide

Springbok

This "jumping buck" is one of South Africa’s national symbols and one of the region’s most gracious animals. The gazelle can run up to 80 kilometers per hour and are often seen trotting, jumping up high in the air with straight legs. It’s a ritual called “pronking” after the Afrikaans word “pronk” which means to show off. Thanks to conservation efforts the springbok (jumping buck) is fairly common sight again. Best places to spot them: Free State, Namibia, Kalahari Desert and the Karoo.
